This past year I have really been focusing on growing my business, new web site, more education, different products offered. the list goes on. One of the things I've learned is you must know your why before you can really grow. The why to starting this photography biz....The answer to me is simple....I started with my kids, once I had children I was taking my camera out more doing little 'photo shoots' with them to capture their cuteness, and so I could remember just how little they were. So I was taking pictures of them monthly, and my love for photography grew, trying to use the window light in my home differently, mind you I just have a little canon point and shoot, so I was limited with my camera options, but I still loved it. I would take hundreds of photos of them, I loved them all, even the crappy ones...Them my love grew and grew for photography. Here are a few photos of their little 'photo shoots'
These are not the best, but I love them so much!! I upgraded my camera from the point and shoot, to a intro DSLR - the Canon rebel T3, oh I was so excited for this, I also started taking professional photography classes online. I would study while they were napping in the afternoon. Once I started doing shoots, I really did everything and anything. You want pictures of your baby in a basket...sure, you need pictures of a birthday party, sure! You want wedding photos done, pick me!! I think most photographers did this. It is a good process, I learned what I liked and what I didn't like. Here is my very first shoot....My brothers family!
One of the first things that I noticed that I loved, was capturing natural emotion. Being honest in my images....I really didn't know how to always capture this, so I would always say stuff like, if I wasn't here, what would you be doing....I loved the reactions I was able to capture, but didn't know how to move on from there. When I started looking into workshops that would help me grow in this business, I took an Instagram workshop and I met, my now good friend, Tessa. She introduced me into promptography......just what I was looking for!! Oh, I just love it when community wins over competition! Now I have a way to learn how to get the natural honest connections, instead of the boring stand and look at the camera photos. One thing that I've done recently is have my website reviewed by other photographers. This really opened my eyes....I thought my site was easy to navigate and find stuff, but that was because I made it. In fact, it wasn't super easy.....so Its been changed if you want to give it another gander. Please if you have any suggestions, send them my way! I also thought I was showing my best work first, but really I was showing my 'safe' work first, meaning I wasn't showing the type of images I'm taking about, the ones that show deep connections, different emotions, different crops, etc. Once I started really digging deep, looking at my work in a different way I also seen this. My goal is to capture your family in an honest way and that everyone is having fun while we are doing it.
I think my heart goes to these kind of images because these are the kind of images I want as a mom. Tell me all your thoughts, feelings, likes, dislikes, I'm here to listen. I can not wait for all of this to be over, cuz I'm gonna be lovin' on all of you. Sending all good thoughts, your way!!
